The municipality of Garachico has once again experienced the impact of coastal storms. In recent hours, strong waves have flooded Avenida Marítima, causing material damage to infrastructure and street furniture. This situation, although worrying, is not new to the town, which has historically suffered the ravages of the sea due to its location and geography.
At LIFE Garachico, we continue working to reduce the damage caused by these coastal phenomena and improve the municipality's adaptive capacity to climate change. The recent flooding reinforces the importance of studying these events to extract lessons that will enable improvements in coastal risk management.
Preventive measures and actions in the face of the storm
Given the forecast of strong storm surges, the Garachico City Council implemented various preventive measures, closing traffic on the avenue and thus avoiding damage to vehicles and risks to pedestrians. In addition, local authorities, in coordination with maintenance teams, are already working to repair the damage, including restoring damaged railings and clearing the road.
The role of LIFE Garachico in protecting the municipality
Our goal is to improve the town's resilience to the effects of climate change, especially coastal flooding. Through data analysis and the implementation of sustainable strategies, we work to reduce the municipality's vulnerability and develop effective prevention and adaptation measures.
Each event of this type allows us to extract key information to continue advancing our research and finding innovative solutions. Collaboration with experts in climatology, engineering, and land management is essential to achieving this.
Although the situation has improved, the public is advised to remain cautious and follow official instructions in the event of further waves. It is essential to avoid risk areas and comply with safety advisories issued by the authorities.
We reaffirm our commitment to protecting the municipality and will continue working to mitigate the effects of these natural phenomena, with the goal of making Garachico a safer and more future-proof environment.
If you have recorded images or videos of the phenomenon, send us your content to comlifegarachico@evm.net indicating the time they were recorded. We want to gather information for analysis and use it for learning and improvement within the framework of LIFE Garachico.
