On May 21, 1992, the European Union adopted the EU Habitats Directive and the LIFE program. Since then, it has supported more than 5,500 high-impact environmental protection, nature conservation, and climate action projects across Europe.
LIFE projects develop and implement innovative strategies to respond to climate challenges. Between 2014 and 2020, some 864 million euros were allocated to projects related to climate change mitigation and adaptation. For the 2021-2027 period, the budget for climate-related issues has been increased by 61%.
